San Francisco is widely recognized as one of the United States and the World’s finest and most popular tourist destination cities. Within the city itself, there are dozens of fun places to go and sights to see which would each be worthy of its own vacation! The Golden Gate Bridge and Lombard Street are, of course, well known, but here’s a look at some other fun San Francisco tourist attractions:
-Pier 39. This shopping center and tourist hotspot, built on a pier, all but constitutes its own city with its many attractions! Not only are there street performers, excellent restaurants, and a video arcade; the pier also provides great views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and California sea lions. The pier is one of San Francisco’s newer attractions, as it opened in 1978, but it is also one of its most beloved sights!
-Alcatraz Island. This famous island, located a mile and a half offshore from the city, contains a lighthouse and a famed prison building, among other attractions. Alcatraz’s largest claim to worldwide fame is Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, a now-defunct prison which was regarded as America’s strongest prison while active. Some of America’s most notorious criminals were held at Alcatraz, including Al Capone, Machine Guy Kelly, and Whitey Bulger. The scenic prison building now serves as a museum, and welcomes well over one million visitors per year.
-The de Young museum. This fine arts museum, located in Golden Gate Park, was founded by San Francisco newspaperman M.H. de Young in 1895. The de Young museum showcases American art from the last five centuries; international contemporary art; textiles; costumes; and a collection of art from Africa, the Pacific Islands, and the Americas. Consistently ranked among the nation and the world’s finest art museums, the de Young is a must-see for any visitor!
-Golden Gate Park. Not to be confused with the associated bridge, this large urban park is home to many of San Francisco’s hotspots, including some mentioned previously on this list! The Park contains a plethora of attractions, including the de Young Museum, the Academy of Sciences, the Japanese Tea Garden, and the Conservatory of Flowers, among many others!
